Today, the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support to West Canitest R & D Inc. (WestCaRD) to assist companies in Manitoba’s aerospace sector.

“Our Government’s top priority is jobs, growth and long-term prosperity,” said Minister Rempel. “This exciting project expands the scope of aerospace work carried out in Manitoba and will help ensure that Manitoba aerospace research and development companies remain competitive globally.”

Building on Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD)’s previous aerospace investments, the additional $1 million in support under the Western Diversification Program will allow WestCaRD to purchase an advanced aerospace handling workstation and testing equipment. This investment will also help support the development of Manitoba’s first aerospace facility capable of both engine testing and post-testing re-design.

Today’s funding announcement by Minister Rempel is a key catalyst in instigating additional investment by GE Aviation and StandardAero,” said Vic Gerden, CEO WestCaRD. “This will result in greater utilization of the GE Aviation Testing Research & Development Centre and greater technology growth In Manitoba through the creation of an exciting new CFM56 Engine Development & Evaluation capability at StandardAero.

Currently, existing facilities are only able to accommodate engine testing. As a result, engine test data must be sent elsewhere to be incorporated in re-design work. This new facility will expand research and development capabilities of Manitoba’s aerospace industry and is expected to generate millions in revenue to the local economy.

GE Aviation is thankful for Minister Rempel and the Government of Canada’s support of WestCaRD and is pleased to contribute to strengthening Manitoba’s aerospace industry through its ongoing commitment and investments,” said Daniel Verreault, Country Director for Canada, Military Systems Operations, GE—Aviation. “Canada’s support of WestCaRD leverages the investments of GE Canada and StandardAero to further broaden the capacity and capability of the GE Engine Testing Research & Development Centre.

The success of the engine testing centre is a direct reflection on the joint partnership, collaboration and investments by GE, WDWestCaRD and StandardAero,” said Kim Olson, Senior Vice President, Engineering and Quality, StandardAero. “Moving toward the future, we are further strengthening our bonds to sustain and grow our world class capability for the global aerospace industry.

WestCaRD is a not-for-profit, non-share corporation that facilitates economic, technical and specialized workforce development and growth opportunities in the environmental testing, research & development sector in Manitoba.

In Partnership with GE Canada and StandardAero, WestCaRD undertakes aircraft engine testing as well as research and technology development at unique test facilities located at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
