Today, at the fourth annual WestDef Symposium, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding to support the Western Canadian Defence Industries Association (WCDIA) in enhancing business growth and international competitiveness.
Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD)'s investment of $57,240 is supporting the WestDef Symposium, which showcases the capabilities of western Canadian defence contractors to major equipment manufacturers. At the Symposium, small- and medium-sized businesses in the aerospace, defence and security sectors will be given the opportunity to form collaborative partnerships with key stakeholders.
Our Government is committed to strengthening these important industries that generate new opportunities for high-value jobs, economic growth and long-term prosperity," said Minister Yelich. "
Through our support, we are helping to ensure that Canadian companies continue to thrive in today's globally competitive environment."
Through the support of Western Economic Diversification Canada, WCDIA has been able to further develop and grow the WestDef Symposium," said JR Cox, Chairman of WCDIA. "
Since the event's inception, over 60 speakers and keynotes have presented to more than 600 delegates and attendees from across Canada, USA, UK and Australia have had the opportunity to experience more than 50 exhibits and displays, and participate in over 100 business-to-business meetings. WCDIA is grateful for WD's investment as it will allow us to continue to create industry driven, business-to-business synergies for today and into the future."
By making strategic investments to advance the western Canadian aerospace, defence and security industries, WD works to ensure that Western Canada continues to excel and maintain its competitive edge on the world stage. Additionally, the Government of Canada's Industrial and Regional Benefits Policy is helping Canadian companies gain access to high quality business opportunities by leveraging Canada's military procurements.
The Harper Government remains focused on four priorities, as outlined by the Prime Minister, that Canadians care most about: their families, the safety of our streets and communities, their pride in being a citizen of this country, and their personal financial security.
Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
