Western Canada is home to a thriving aerospace industry. More than 450 companies servicing the aerospace industry, employing some 15,000 workers, generate annual revenue exceeding $4 billion.
Leading aerospace multinationals and small and medium enterprises in Western Canada specialize in commercial and military aircraft repair and manufacturing, repair and maintenance of turbine engines, and flight simulator technology. It also offers satellite-based communication systems, unmanned vehicle systems, space and remote sensing technology and composites manufacturing and repair.
Winnipeg, Manitoba has Canada’s third largest aerospace sector with excellent advanced composites capabilities. It is western North America’s leading low-cost aerospace manufacturing centre and home to the continent’s premier narrow-body maintenance shop and a premier independent turbine engine MRO facility. B.C. is home to a growing network of aircraft component specialists, repair and overhaul companies. High technology highlights include remote sensing satellites, complex robotics and 3-D simulation technology and composite structures. B.C. also provides state-of-the-art aerospace technology training in step with global industry demands.
Western Canada has an extensive network of aviation research and development institutions too, including an Aerospace Engineering and Test Establishment in Alberta, a world-class Cold Weather Testing Facility and the Composites Innovation Centre in Manitoba, and the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron in Saskatchewan.
