Announcement Opportunities

Grow West: The Western Canada Growth Strategy

Grow West will provide ongoing communications and announcement opportunities for the Minister and WD. Launched in June 2019, the strategy is a call-to-action for WD’s diverse partners to work together to tackle western economic priorities.

The Minister can be the face of Grow West, shaping its communications strategy and leading ongoing engagement with western Canadians and federal partners. The Minister will have opportunities to make announcements for major actions under the strategy, such as investments, new partnerships, and sharing progress. This could include both WD-led initiatives and collaborative actions from partners. Early events and announcements signals continued federal support for Grow West and helps build momentum.

Prairie Water and Land Management Strategy

WD is working with partners and stakeholders to develop the Prairie Water and Land Management Strategy. By March 2020, WD will prepare a report and recommendations for the strategy, a proposed pilot infrastructure project in southern Saskatchewan to build a 90 kilometre canal to bring water from Lake Diefenbaker to Buffalo Pound Lake, and considerations for the establishment of a Canada Water Agency. The strategy and potential pilot infrastructure project, which capitalizes on underused resources from Lake Diefenbaker, would pave the way for prairie farmers to produce higher-value crops through irrigation, and improve Canada’s standing as a global leader in plant protein. It would also enhance the value-added agri-food economy, giving it the potential to rival the oil and gas sector’s contribution to Canada’s economy.
