COLLÈGE UNIVERSITAIRE DE SAINT-BONIFACE

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA

Pan-western consortium

The Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface (CUSB) in Winnipeg is the only recognized post-secondary institution in Manitoba that offers French-language distance education. The college has 770 full-time and 420 part-time students.

The college offers online courses in several topic areas. For example, it offers an undergraduate Translation Certificate that includes 11 courses. All the necessary course material is available by Internet. It also offers a Master's level program in Canadian studies online. As well, an undergraduate Introduction to Tourism is offered through l'École technique et professionnelle, which is a division within the college.

In partnership with Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD), CUSB launched a pilot project in distance education for developing an online Master's of Education degree in school administration.

In addition, the college formed a consortium with three other institutions: Simon Fraser University in B.C., Campus Saint-Jean at the University of Alberta, and l'Institut français at the University of Regina. The objective is for these institutions to collaborate on various initiatives, including the sharing of courses to enhance accessibility for students throughout Western Canada.

Initially, the four institutions developed an agreement protocol. A five-year schedule was also established for offering existing online courses. The courses to be developed were then identified. In 2007-2008, each institution will be asked to develop a number of courses. Under the agreement, students can register with any one of these institutions, but then take courses offered by other institutions in the consortium to meet the program requirements of their home institution.

Eventually, the pilot project will lead to a fully established consortium across the West. Students will be able to register for a Master's in Education at any one of these colleges, and choose from the online courses provided by any of these institutions.
