Harper Government Supports New Market Opportunities for the Biotechnology and Biomass Industry

December 13, 2013
Winnipeg, Manitoba

Western small- and medium-sized businesses in the biomass product sector will see increased export and growth opportunities, thanks to support from the Harper Government announced today by Member of Parliament Joyce Bateman, on behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.

Federal funding of $250,000, through the Western Diversification Program, will enable the Life Science Association of Manitoba (LSAM) to organize and deliver a targeted Biomass Trade Initiative that will establish a brand for biomass products, expertise and raw materials. LSAM will develop and produce an interactive business pavilion and participate in international trade shows to maximize exposure and impact.

Quick Facts

  • Through this project, Canadian companies will be strategically promoted at international trade shows to ensure maximum exposure and impact.
  • The business pavilion includes private meeting space to improve the ability of companies to "close the deal" at trade shows.
  • Biomass is residual plant matter, or leftover natural fibre, that is recognized as a renewable source of raw material for manufacturing as advances in new technologies and processes are delivering innovative bioproducts, such as biocomposite materials.

"This investment demonstrates our Government’s commitment to supporting expanded market opportunities for western Canadian businesses. Our investment will help to promote innovative products, and create new jobs and economic opportunities."

  • Joyce Bateman, Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South Centre

"The Life Science Association of Manitoba is thrilled to receive this support from Western Economic Diversification Canada. This project allows Manitoba companies to increase their success in global trade through improved skills, new business connections and robust onsite presence at international meetings. With a strong agricultural industry, Manitoba has a unique opportunity to be a world leader in industrial biotech. This support from the Government of Canada provides the business tools to achieve this goal."

  • Tracey Maconachie, President, Life Science Association of Manitoba
