Harper Government Invests in Improvements to Edmonton's Community Infrastructure (2)

April 03, 2013
Edmonton, Alberta

Today, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, Minister for Status of Women and Member of Parliament for Edmonton—Spruce Grove, announced support for the Callingwood/Lymburn Outdoor Rink under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

"Our Government is pleased to support the modernization of community infrastructure through projects like the Callingwood/Lymburn Outdoor Rink resurfacing," said Minister Ambrose. "Our investment here will help ensure our community has access to this facility for years to come while creating new economic opportunities."

The Harper Government's investment of $75,300 will support the resurfacing of the outdoor rink to allow for year-round recreational activities. The new concrete surface will enable the rink to be used in the summer months for sports like rollerblading and ball hockey, attracting a wider range of users to this valued community hub.

"Thanks to the funding support from the federal government, Callingwood/Lymburn residents will soon be able to enjoy this wonderful facility for 12 months a year. In addition to skating, the rink area will be paved for summertime sports such as ball hockey, roller blading or lacrosse. This will provide a safe area for sports in the summer and a smoother skating surface in the winter," said Terry Demers, President Callingwood/Lymburn Community League. "With support through the Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund, we are able to provide quality outdoor areas for our community."

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
