Harper Government Invests in Improvements to Edmonton's Community Infrastructure

December 18, 2012
Edmonton, Alberta

Today, the Honourable Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced federal funding for renovations to the Downtown Edmonton Community League Centre under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

"I am proud to see the City of Edmonton benefit from our Government's investment in community infrastructure," said MP Hawn. "This investment will help create jobs, growth, and long-term prosperity for the Edmonton community while leaving a lasting legacy of improved local infrastructure."

Federal funding of $16,264 will support renovations to a multi-purpose facility space to create a Downtown Edmonton Community League Centre. This Centre will accommodate public community and recreational programming, providing valuable opportunities for residents of Edmonton's downtown core.

"As the downtown grows, so too are the needs of our residents. This funding commitment will provide more opportunities for residents to get involved in their community with this new expansion," said Chris Buyze, President of the Downtown Edmonton Community League. "We look forward to entering a new chapter in our development, as we begin to celebrate 10 years as a Community League in Edmonton."

CIIF supports, on a cost-shared basis, repairs and improvements to existing community infrastructure accessible to the public. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the Fund in Western Canada with an allocation of $46.2 million over two years.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
