Canada Strengthens Medical Research in British Columbia

March 17, 2011
Vancouver, British Columbia

The Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification (WD), announced $900,000 in Government of Canada support for the Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD) to establish a leading-edge Biologics Division at its facilities on the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus.

Our Government is helping support the development of emerging areas of medicine into commercially viable medical drugs and therapies for all Canadians,” said Minister Yelich. “Today’s investment exemplifies how academia, government and industry are working together to improve the health and quality of life for Canadians, while creating new economic opportunities.

The new Biologics Division will take on projects with academic researchers and local industry to expand opportunities in the biologics sector and increase the number of highly skilled personnel in the West. It will also complement the CDRD’s current expertise in medicinal chemistry and bring much needed drug therapies to market. This funding will purchase, install and commission several pieces of scientific equipment and software, as well as hire the people to operate it.

WD is a major federal partner in enabling the building of world-class innovative organizations in Canada. CDRD is delighted to have WD collaborate with us again on establishing a new biologics division that further enhances our drug development platform which is world recognized,” said Karimah Es Sabar, SVP Business and Strategic Affairs. “Without this kind of partnership from WD and the Federal Government, it would not be possible to build such a fully-integrated drug development centre.

CDRD is a Vancouver-based, independent, not-for-profit, public-private organization with a focus on bridging the gap between academic discoveries in the health sciences and the development of new medicines to treat human disease. CDRD provides drug-development expertise and facilities to enable researchers across Canada to develop promising medicinal candidates.

Western Economic Diversification Canada works with the provinces, industry associations, and communities to promote the development and diversification of the western economy, coordinates federal economic activities in the West and advances the interests of western Canadians in national decision making.
