James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo – Alberni on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced Government of Canada support to help Alberni Engineering strengthen economic opportunities in Port Alberni.
With this funding, Alberni Engineering is designing and building a dynamic positioning work and recovery barge. The 'smart' barge will be a value-added processing opportunity for the forestry industry to harvest and salvage submerged timber that can be used to produce a variety of products. The project will create training opportunities for members of the Tseshaht First Nations.
This funding will ensure the project moves ahead; it will create local employment and support new economic opportunities for Alberni Engineering and the forest sector in the Alberni Valley and Coastal BC,” said MP Lunney.
Federal repayable funding of $306,320 is being provided through the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
Alberni Engineering would like to thank Western Economic Diversification for this funding, which allowed Alberni Engineering to secure a contract for the fabrication and construction of a Dynamic Positioning prototype barge,” said Steve Dunagan, Manager, Alberni Engineering. “
Alberni Engineering is working to secure more contracts now that the prototype is in operation – if we are successful, more jobs will be created.”
CAF supports the most affected western Canadian communities, such as those that are heavily reliant on resource-based industries. Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is delivering the fund in the four western provinces.
