Fish Creek Recreation Complex Receives Federal Support

February 26, 2010
Calgary, Alberta

The South Fish Creek Recreation Association is moving forward with the expansion of the Fish Creek Recreation Complex thanks to the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job-creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

Our Government is investing in this expansion to create jobs and give more people the opportunity to enjoy the recreational activities offered at the Complex, while also taking advantage of the forthcoming artistic and cultural spaces,” said the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration & Multiculturalism and Member of Parliament for Calgary Southeast, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification.

Funding of $1,000,000 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

The expansion involves adding two arenas, ten change rooms and areas for recreational, social, artistic and cultural uses to the complex. As the existing facilities are being used to capacity, the additions will help meet the current and future recreational needs of the community. The expansion will also create immediate employment and contribute to the economic well-being of the surrounding community.

The expansion of the South Fish Creek arenas from two arenas to four arenas has been a long-standing need for Calgary,” says Simone Mersereau, President of the South Fish Creek Recreation Association. “Thousands of hours of volunteer work and fundraising are represented in this project. The RInC funding is needed and greatly appreciated. Thank you on behalf of all of the communities of south Calgary.

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period. It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.
